Core focus on home extensions, lofts and wall removals Building Control ready structural packs Serving homeowners, architects, builders and small developers

Most of our work is for homes, not tower blocks. We spend our days looking at real UK houses, real drawings and real site photos. The goal stays the same: safe, practical structures that your builder can follow and your inspector can approve.

Every project is checked to the current Eurocodes with UK National Annexes. That is what Building Control expect to see on new work, from simple RSJs through to basements, retaining walls and portal frames.

Our story – why SECalcs exists

SECalcs started with a simple idea. Most homeowners and builders want straight answers, not long reports. They want designs that are safe, buildable and delivered quickly so the project can move ahead without stress.

From messy reports to clear packs

Our engineers came from domestic and small scale commercial backgrounds. We kept seeing the same problems: unclear notes, slow communication and structural designs that made construction harder than it needed to be.

SECalcs was set up to fix that. We focus on tidy drawings, plain English notes and practical beam choices that keep rooms usable and ceiling heights comfortable.

Today we support thousands of UK clients with structural calculations that are easy to follow and ready for Building Control. Many projects repeat the same themes: RSJ beams for open plan kitchens, loft conversions, rear and side extensions and retaining walls in sloping gardens.

What guides our work

  • Residential focus: typical jobs are wall removals, lofts, extensions, basements and small frames.
  • Speed: most domestic projects complete within 24 to 72 hours once we have drawings and photos.
  • Clarity: every pack is prepared so builders and inspectors can see what is going on at a glance.
  • Support: we stay involved through Building Control queries and reasonable site questions.

What we do at SECalcs

The same structural thinking sits behind all our work. These are the services most people use us for. Each link goes to a dedicated page with detail and examples.

Portal frames and concrete design

Steel portal frames for small warehouses and workshops, mezzanine floors, steel columns and reinforced concrete beams, columns and slabs.

See portal frames, mezzanine floors, RC beams and RC columns.

Structural checks and reports

Subsidence checks, crack assessments and defect investigations for houses, extensions and small commercial units. We focus on clear explanations, not long jargon heavy reports.

Many issues link back to masonry walls, slabs or industrial ground floors.

How we work on your project

The process is the same whether you need a single RSJ or a full structural pack for an extension or loft conversion.

1. Send drawings and photos

You share architect plans, sketches or measured photos along with the property address. We check what is needed and confirm whether site visits are required.

2. Agree the scheme and fee

We agree the structural scheme, list of elements and any assumptions. You get a fixed fee and a realistic turnaround, usually 24 to 72 hours for typical domestic work.

3. Calculations and drawings

We design beams, walls, slabs, foundations and frames, then issue drawings, markups and calculation sheets in PDF. Everything is prepared ready for Building Control submission.

4. Support through to sign off

If your Building Control officer or warranty provider has questions, we reply and update where agreed. We also answer reasonable questions from your builder during the build.

Our YouTube channel – structural engineering in plain English

We share the same approach online as we do in our day to day work: clear explanations, simple diagrams and practical checks. Our channel has more than 50,000 subscribers, many of them builders, technicians and homeowners trying to understand the basics.
